  • Cameras and Videos

  • Most modern mobile devices are equipped with cameras, this allows end users to captures pictures and videos with ease. For example, staff members are able to take a picture of an expense receipt or a product or record an incident and report it to the head office with a few finger taps.

  • Motion Sensors

  • You will be surprised to know that your mobile device has a number of motion sensors, the accelerometer, gyroscope, gravity, linear acceleration and rotation sensor. All these sensors will help monitor tilt, shake, rotation and swing motions. These sensors, when used in a mobile app, can dramatically increase user interaction.

  • Environmental Sensors

  • Have you noticed that your mobile device is able to detect if it is day or night, too hot or cold and too humid or dry? This is thanks to four environmental sensors that are available on most modern devices. These sensors are relative ambient humidity, illuminance, ambient pressure and ambient temperature.

  • Position Sensors

  • Position sensors are useful for determining the physical location of the device. The geomagnetic, orientation and proximity sensors help determine the device location and proximity. The GPS sensor is quite popular as well, when used in conjunction with a map enabled app it becomes our travel guide and most people wouldn’t want to be without it.

    Native Mobile Applications

    The mobile apps which run natively on mobile platforms are faster, reliable and are able to use hardware sensors and platform capabilities better.

    A mobile app can be developed with different tools and technologies, however if it is developed with a platform specific technology stack we call it a native mobile app. Each mobile platform including Apple iOS, Google Android and Windows Phone offers their own flavour of development environment, programming language and coding best practices.

    When choosing a technology stack one should consider whether the application needs to access phone hardware, sensors and graphics capabilities, if the answer is yes then it is best to develop with a platform specific technology stack. This will ensure that the mobile app will perform better and will be reliable and responsive.

    The only drawback in developing a native mobile app is the cost, this is because there will be no code reuse and a developer has to rewrite the same functionality separately on each platform. In general terms a native mobile app costs double if it needs to be developed on both iOS and Android platforms.

    Hybrid Mobile Applications

    Hybrid mobile apps are faster to develop and cost half the price compared to native mobile apps.

    We understand that not all mobile apps are performance critical and may not require access to all the hardware features and sensors. This is where hybrid mobile apps are suited better, they offer faster development, code reuse and cost savings.

    There are number of hybrid mobile app frameworks available including PhoneGap, Telerik Kendo UI, Sencha Touch and the most recent one React Native all of which offer code reuse and faster development cycles. When a mobile app is developed with one of these frameworks it can run on all supported mobile platforms with no or little effort.

    Most hybrid apps run in a web container, in other words they do not run natively on the mobile platform, however some of the hybrid platforms convert their apps to native mobile apps, for example when a mobile app is developed with Xamarin framework it runs natively on all supported mobile platforms. This gives us the best of both worlds, a faster development and code reuse as well as a natively compiled mobile app.
